A Supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon's closest approach to Earth (perigee). During a Supermoon, the Moon appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it's at its farthest point.
In astrology, Supermoons amplify lunar energy - emotions run higher, intuition is stronger, and the effects of the full moon are more pronounced. Many people report sleep disturbances and heightened sensitivity.
The term "Supermoon" was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, and astronomers later adopted it for public communication despite having the technical term "perigee-syzygy."
